Teaching medical and audiology students at UCL and Southbank University about human hearing is one of the favorite activities of Bradford Backus. In response to identified student needs and with support from UCL, Audio3 Ltd. developed a software program designed to demonstrate how interaural level differences (ILDs) and interaural time differences (ITDs) combine to produce the spatial sound perceptions we all experience. The software was designed to be easily used in the lab to demonstrate:

  • Time vs. intensity trading
  • ITD vs. IPD sensitivity
  • Frequency limitations of ILD and ITD cues
  • Many other experiments!

The software is made available to others teaching hearing upon request. It has been a great to develope these teaching materials with UCL support. We are delighted the software continues to be used to illustrate concepts of spatial hearing to students.
